Went to see Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets last night. Things I disliked:

- The male lead's acting
- The female lead's acting
- The fact that I had to sit through previews for Pitch Perfect 3 and Daddy's Home 2 but did not get one for The Shape of Water
I actually really liked this movie but I don't know if anyone is planning to watch it, so I'm cutting the rest of my dislikes and also my likes and other comments for possible spoilers. )

Friends, I'm thinking of starting up a collection on AO3 where we can all write first kisses of our favorite fandom pairings (or threesomes, or more) in much the same vein as [community profile] mcsmooch back in the day. (How I wish journal comms were still a thing, because that would be so much easier!)

I plan to do some hunting around later today to figure this all out, but if anyone knows of a cheat sheet for how to essentially run a comm through AO3 I would be glad to see it!

More news as I get this going . . .

This installment of True Crimer is, I promise, not quite so much of a downer as the tale of Dorothy Jane Scott, and far less likely to give you nightmares. Tonight I’m going to tell you the story of Dolly Oesterreich.

I took tonight off as a Mental Health Day. And by that I mean I texted my boss yesterday at about 10:30am, letting her know I wasn't planning on being in Tuesday night, and that I apologized for not being able to start helping to train the new girl whose name I can't remember, et cetera, et cetera.

It felt kind of weird, to be honest. Not that I've never called in, because I've done that; I've just never literally said to my boss "all I want to do right now is sit on the couch and cry. Or lie in bed forever. So I'm staying home, because I don't think I'd get anything done at work tonight anyway."

On the bright side she told me she totally understood, and hoped I felt better.

In other news, my very exciting streak has gone down the goddamn drain, because HEY!

Guess who just had two seizures within less than 24 hours of each other!

2:30am Monday morning, and then 2:00am Tuesday morning. I'm honestly almost shocked I didn't have one this morning. (Nooooot that I'm complaining. For the record.)

(So not really "in other news" so much as "in related news, because this is precisely why I was so miserable yesterday and am only slightly better today". The improvement seems, I think, to be mainly because I did nothing today but sit around and read fic and regret my inability to plot my own, since I have what I think is the makings of a semi-decent one pinging around in my brain refusing to shut up. But mostly read other people's, honestly.)

[personal profile] jothra went to a library sale last week and asked if I had any requests: "Weird 70s Gothics? Trixie, Belden?"

"WEIRD 70S GOTHICS PLEASE," I said, and Jo duly carried out her commission so well that I don't know if anybody's ever going to top it:

Portrait in Jig-Saw is apparently so obscure it doesn't even have a Goodreads page, which, having read it, I can honestly now say is kind of a shame.

Our Heroine's name is Alixander David Somerlaid MacDonald (I KNOW), otherwise known as Alisdair; she is a Strictly Sheltered Heiress who has been raised in a Freezing Castle in Complete Isolation and Solitude with only occasional visits from her father until she comes of age on her 21st birthday.

...for the record, the year is 1973.

My legit favorite part about these spoilers is that the entire plot relies on an alternate universe where the world's most famous postmodern novelist is a Thai princess, I want to live in THAT universe! )

The Thor: Ragnarok trailer looks just delightful:

Who knew I'd end up anticipating the third Thor movie over the next Avengers one? But Infinity Wars looks like it will be over-stuffed and unsatisfying on a character level, whereas this looks like quirky fun.

Good morning everyone, and welcome to Radio Free Monday!

Ways To Give:

Anon reminds us that the 2017-18 school year is coming, and [tumblr.com profile] positivelypt has a post up with links to wishlists for underserved classrooms. You can check out the list, give, and reblog here.

[tumblr.com profile] rilee16 is struggling to cover medical expenses after two head injuries last year, and has a fundraiser running to cover living expenses, previous medical bills, and a recent rent increase. You can read more and help out here.

Help For Free:

Anon linked to [tumblr.com profile] globalsextrendsproject, who are working on an independent research projected aimed at establishing whether there are global trends in stimuli for sexual arousal and the content of sexual fantasies. You can read more and reblog here or fill out the form here. I took a quick breeze through the form and it's primarily short-answer rather than multiple choice, once you get past the demographic stuff.

Activism:

[tumblr.com profile] stabulous has a post up about Welcome Blanket, a project initiated by the Smart Museum of Art in Chicago and anti-Trump craftivists. They are asking people to send handmade blankets to be exhibited at the Smart and afterwards distributed to refugees and immigrants arriving in the US. The hope is to create 3200 blankets to equal the length of the wall Trump wants to build across the US-Mexico border. You can read more at the link above, and find out how to participate at the official site, which includes activism resources whether you want to actually send in a blanket or not.

News To Know:

[personal profile] brainwane linked to Creative Commons, which is offering grants of up to USD$1000 for small projects ("Salons, campaigns, translations, e-books, printing, collaborations, and more") which grow the global commons. They want help increasing discovery, collaboration, and advocacy towards their mission. You can read more and apply for a grant here.

Anon linked to [tumblr.com profile] dr-kara's new comic available on ComixOlogy, [Super]Natural Attraction! Kara is well-known to me as a groovy artist who does cool stuff so while I haven't read this yet I wholeheartedly recommend her work. She has a rebloggable post about it here and you can buy and read it here.

And this has been Radio Free Monday! Thank you for your time. You can post items for my attention at the Radio Free Monday submissions form. If you're not sure how to proceed, here is a little more about what I do and how you can help (or ask for help!). If you're new to fundraising, you may want to check out my guide to fundraising here.

So I know some of you guessed this already, but for those who haven't seen the community announcement yet and are interested in this sort of thing: I'm very excited to be joining the [community profile] femslashex mod team this year! This is one of my all time favourite exchanges from back when it was femslash-year-number, and I'm really happy to be helping to keep it ticking over going forward.

I have also strained my wrist and am lumbering about in a giant wrist brace, and forgetting and typing/lifting/living life with both hands periodically and then swearing a lot. So between modding, writing, and that I probably won't be around much for a little bit. But I am reading! I can scroll a reading page one handed at least!

Just read a lovely column called [Your Three Feet of Influence]. The author suggests that while we cannot control the world, we can choose what we do with the three feet directly around us, and whether we bring to that three feet justice, calm, and kindness or not. Great reading for this Sunday!

My nieces (4, 10) have been watching The Great British Baking Show, and decided that yesterday afternoon should be all baking, all the time. So I went over and helped out, and we made the FUSSIEST BAKED GOODS IMAGINABLE. First came the Banana Bread from America's Test Kitchen. What a pain in the ass that recipe is. And yet it made the best banana bread I have ever tasted, so I can do little but shake my fist and do what they say.

Then we made Blackberry Scones, which had the best-tasting scone mix imaginable, and which took forever to make. I think I'd like them better with blueberries or raspberries, but they're very tasty (no doubt from all the butter). Again, very fussy recipe, but the end product felt worth it.

At the end of the afternoon, niece C made brownies out of a box, and lo, we were glad for it :D

Woke up this morning stiff in every place imaginable, so I'll need to do a bit of gentle yoga to loosen back up after I finish this cup of tea. I feel like Andy in Parks and Recreation - working out is great and all but at what cost? :D

Coding resources?

Anyone out there on the ol' flist have any suggestions for tutorials or books I can read (hopefully from the library) to help me learn how to work with node webkit programming?

I'm a tinkerer and when I say "learn code" I usually mean "make it break in interesting ways until I--nearly accidentally--cobble together something that works".

Specifically what I want to do is this.

I used Twine Wrapper to make an app out of my Twine game.

I can see in the app.js file that it is possible to add, remove, and edit menus and menu items.

I'd like to change the menus so that "Edit" and probably "Window" are hidden (but not disabled, in case people still want to copy & paste...???). Then I want to add a "File" menu with "Redo" and "Undo" as menu items. These items would then have the same functionality as the Undo and Redo arrows/buttons in the Twine game itself.

From looking at the HTML source, I see that these buttons trigger "Engine.goBack" and "Engine.goForward" commands. But how to get a menu item to do that? I don't even know what that is.

For reference, a page like this is way over my head. I am definitely looking for the "For Dummies" end of the tutorial spectrum. To be really, really clear, I am asking to learn how to program, and I don't even know which programming language I'm asking about.

Thank you anyone who can point me in a direction!
